THERE'S A SAYING...
"You don't know WHAT you don't know"...
This couldn't possibly be more apt than when referring to your PDA.
In an attempt to save money, many parents, relatives or friends may (with all good intentions) attempt to teach someone how to drive...attempt a PDA and then fail...thus having to re-book a test and consequently clogging up the (already overwhelmed) PDA booking system. The knee-jerk reaction is to blame the booking system. Whilst it's common
knowledge that the system has had problems...some of the responsibility lies with the candidates themselves.
Imagine ONE candidate who repeatedly attempts a PDA...trained only by a parent. This candidate fails three times and has to re-book each time. Multiply this candidate by THOUSANDS of candidates STATEWIDE who are also repeatedly failing and re-booking.
Many of you will have no idea of the set exercises or the criteria under which you will be assessed.
DoT STRONGLY recommend employing the services of a fully qualified Instructor specifically for this reason.
You should also be aware that your Learners' Permit only allows you one (1) FREE assessment. Subsequent PDA's bookings are now $114.50 per PDA (as at 10/7/24)

LESSONS (what to expect)
Your first few lessons will always be in a very quiet location. where there are no distractions. During this time you will be taught the basic operation of the vehicle and system of vehicle control.
GAIN EXPERIENCE
Once you have gained confidence & competence in these basic functions, you will be graduated to slightly busier roads. Your rate of graduation to busier roads will be proportionate to your degree of confidence & competence…e.g., you will not be expected to drive on Albany Highway until you have gained an acceptable level of confidence & competence.
LEARN THE REQUIRED EXERCISES & MANOEUVRES
Once you have completed this phase of your learning process, I will begin teaching the set exercises that WILL BE IN YOUR PDA (Practical Driving Assessment). The “Stop for Shopping” and “Left Something Behind” exercises form the greater proportion of your PDA. You will also be taught hill-parks, hill-starts, 3-point turns, parking, reverse parallel parks and special observations applicable to various traffic conditions, railway crossings, following distances...to mention only a few.
BOOKING YOUR PDA
Many people complain about waiting periods to book a PDA (Practical Driving Assessment).
There are many factors contributing to this current situation:

1. Candidates presenting for their PDA who are grossly underprepared. Many are not aware of the set
exercises that WILL be in the PDA. The mindset is: “I’ll give it a go and see what happens”. Inevitably,
these people fail and then need to rebook - thus depriving those who ARE prepared.
DoT strongly recommend using a qualified instructor to prepare for your PDA. Only a qualified instructor
will be aware of the set exercises and CURRENT road rules.

2. Candidates are following outdated road rules. Parents and supervising drivers should be aware that some road rules have changed.

3. NO SHOWS. Unbelievably there are some people who simply don't show up for their PDA.

4. It was recently disclosed on 6PR that some unscrupulous individual has devised a "bot" that sweeps the
PDA booking system for availabilities. This situation is currently being investigated.

5. Abuse of the PDA booking system (also currently under investigation).
